Best 510 Batteries for Cartridges: Compatibility, Voltage & How to Choose
Quick answer: A 510 battery is the standard screw-on battery for most vape cartridges. Most 510-thread cartridges work with most 510 batteries, though cart width and battery design can still affect the fit. PAX Era pods and STIIIZY pods use their own systems and won't. The best 510 battery for most people has adjustable voltage, a preheat setting and a USB-C port; on our menu, the Fernway Stylus is the one that ticks every box. Whatever the cart, start at the lowest voltage and turn it up only if needed. When a battery dies, don't throw it in the trash: in New York City, rechargeable batteries have to be recycled.
What Is a 510 Battery?
"510" is the name of the thread on the bottom of most vape cartridges, and a 510 battery is any battery built to screw onto it. The name comes from the thread spec: ten threads, 0.5 mm apart. What matters in practice is that it's a shared standard, so carts and batteries from different brands work together.
That's why most cartridges on New York menus are listed as "510." On our menu right now that includes carts from Jaunty, Florist Farms, Hudson Cannabis, MFNY, Jetty and Fernway.
Four formats don't need a separate 510 battery:
- All-in-one (AIO) vapes. The battery is built in. You use it until the oil runs out, and some models can be recharged along the way.
- PAX Era pods. These only work in PAX Era batteries, like the PAX Era Go.
- STIIIZY pods. These only work in STIIIZY batteries, like the STIIIZY XL Pro.
- Rove Reload pods. These use Rove's Diamond Series pod battery, not a 510 battery.
Our PAX vs. STIIIZY comparison covers those two systems. For the wider picture of cartridges, disposables and pods, see our guide to the best weed vapes in NYC.
Will a 510 Battery Fit My Cartridge?
In almost every case, yes. A few things can still get in the way:
- Size. A wide or tall cart (often the 1g ones) may not sit flush on a narrow battery or fit inside a concealed, "hidden cart" style battery.
- Magnetic adapters. Some batteries connect through a small magnetic ring that screws onto the cart. It still uses the 510 thread, so it's the same compatibility.
- Over-tightening. Screw the cart on until it's just snug. Cranking it down can damage the center pin and stop the connection.
If you're unsure, bring the cart to the store and try it on the battery before you buy.

Button vs. Draw-Activated Batteries
| Button battery | Draw-activated (auto-draw) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it fires | Press and hold the button while you inhale | Fires automatically when you inhale |
| Voltage control | Usually adjustable (3 to 5 settings) | Often fixed or limited |
| Preheat | Common | Less common |
| Best for | People who want control | Simplicity, discretion |
On most button batteries, five quick clicks turn it on or off, three clicks change the voltage, and two clicks start preheat. Check your model's instructions, since brands vary.
Edie Parker's Flower Mini battery wand is a good example of the draw-activated style: no button, a compact battery and the brand's signature design-object look. What comes in the box can vary by model and retailer, so check that a charger is included before you buy.
Best 510 Batteries for Cartridges: How the Options Compare
There's no single best 510 battery. The features worth comparing are adjustable voltage, preheat, charging method and cartridge fit. Here are the 510 batteries on our menu right now, compared on the specs their makers publish.
| Battery | Capacity | Voltage | Preheat | Charging | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fernway Stylus | Not listed | 4 settings: 2.6, 3.0, 3.4, 3.8V | Yes | USB-C, can vape while charging | Control and flavor, most 510 carts |
| Rove Designer Pro 510 | 650mAh | 4 power settings | Not listed | Micro USB | Longer battery life, magnetic connection |
| Rove Slim Battery 510 | 350mAh | 3 power settings | Not listed | USB | A simple, low-cost pen |
| Edie Parker Flower Mini Wand | Compact | Not listed | Not listed | Check what's included | Style, gifting, simplicity |
Specs come from manufacturer and retailer listings and can change between versions.
What the table doesn't show:
- The Fernway Stylus has the most complete controls of the group. Its lowest setting, 2.6V, is the one Fernway labels for the strongest flavor, and two clicks start preheat for a cold or sluggish cart.
- The Rove Designer Pro has the biggest battery of the four and connects through magnetic collars, two of which come in the box.
- The Rove Slim is the entry-level option: light, simple and inexpensive.
- The Edie Parker wand trades voltage control for design. It's a good fit for distillate carts and for anyone who wants a battery that looks good on a table.
Outside our menu, CCELL batteries like the Palm Pro (2.8, 3.2 and 3.6V with a 10-second preheat) and the Yocan Uni Pro (2.0 to 4.2V, with an adjustable fit for wide carts) are also widely used.
Which one is best for THC cartridges? Pick a battery whose voltage range covers the low end (around 2.8V or below) and that has preheat. That gives you room to dial in any cart, from distillate to live resin and rosin. Of the batteries on our menu, the Fernway Stylus checks both boxes. Beyond that, choose by size, battery life and how it feels in your hand.

What Voltage Should I Use on a 510 Battery?
Lower voltage means cooler vapor and more flavor. Higher voltage means bigger clouds, but also more risk of a burnt taste and a shorter cart life.
Variable-voltage batteries usually offer settings somewhere between about 2.5 and 4 volts, as the comparison above shows. A simple rule:
- Start at the lowest setting. Go up one step only if the hit feels weak.
- Match the voltage to the cart. Different oils and cartridge designs work best at different settings. If the cart's brand lists a recommended range, follow it. Lower settings usually preserve more flavor.
- Use preheat for a cold or sluggish cart. A few seconds of low heat loosens the oil before you pull, which helps in a New York winter when a cart has been in your coat pocket. Preheat settings vary by device, so follow your battery's instructions.
- A burnt taste means too much heat. Turn it down. If the taste stays after that, the coil may already be scorched.

Battery Size and How to Charge a 510 Battery
Battery capacity is listed in mAh. Most 510 batteries fall somewhere between roughly 280 and 1,000 mAh. Smaller batteries, like the 350mAh Rove Slim, are lighter and more discreet. Larger ones, like the 650mAh Rove Designer Pro, last longer between charges.
A few charging habits that help a battery last:
- Use the right charger. Most new batteries use USB-C. Older and slimmer ones often use a 510 USB charger that screws onto the thread.
- Unplug when it's full. Most batteries show a light that changes color or stops blinking when charged.
- Keep it out of the heat. Lithium-ion batteries don't like a hot car or a sunny windowsill.
- Never charge a damaged battery. If a battery overheats, swells, leaks, smells unusual or fires on its own, stop using it and don't charge it.
510 Battery Not Working? Blinking, No Hit, Clogs
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Battery blinks and won't fire | Low charge or bad connection | Charge it; unscrew and reattach the cart |
| No vapor, no light | Battery off or fully dead | Five clicks to turn on; charge |
| Weak or no draw | Cold or thick oil, clogged airway | Use preheat; warm the cart in your hand |
| Burnt taste | Voltage too high | Lower the setting; give the cart a minute to cool |
| Oil in the mouthpiece | Pulling too hard, or cart left lying flat | Shorter, gentler draws; store the cart upright |
Blink patterns differ by brand, so check the manual for what yours means. If a battery won't charge or fire after these steps, it's usually time to replace it.
How to Dispose of a Vape Battery in NYC
Don't put it in the trash or the recycling. New York City says it is "dangerous and illegal" to throw rechargeable batteries out with household waste, because lithium-ion batteries can start fires in garbage trucks and facilities.
Instead, you can:
- find a store drop-off through Call2Recycle
- bring it to a DSNY Special Waste Drop-off site
- bring it to a DSNY SAFE Disposal event
Before you drop it off, DSNY asks that batteries be bagged individually or have their terminals taped to prevent sparks. Details are on the DSNY battery page. Check that your drop-off point accepts complete vape devices. Empty cartridges with no battery attached are a separate item, so check your local rules for those.
You can also bring used vapes to us. Mighty Lucky takes part in Fernway’s vape recycling program, so there’s a drop-off point at our store at 259 Bowery. Fernway says the program is expanding to cover any cannabis vape, not only its own, so ask a budtender what the drop box currently accepts. For other participating dispensaries in New York, use Fernway's recycling finder.

FAQ
What is the best 510 battery for cartridges?
The best choice for most people is a battery with adjustable voltage, preheat and USB-C charging. On our menu, the Fernway Stylus offers the most control, the Rove Designer Pro the longest battery life, the Rove Slim the lowest price, and the Edie Parker wand the most style.
What's the best battery for THC cartridges?
For live resin and rosin carts, choose a battery with a low starting voltage (around 2.8V or below) and a preheat function. For distillate carts, most 510 batteries work well.
Are all 510 batteries the same?
They share the same thread, so most fit the same carts, but cart width, battery housing and connection quality can still affect fit and performance. They also differ in capacity, voltage control, activation style (button or draw), preheat and charging port.
Will a 510 battery work with STIIIZY or PAX pods?
No. STIIIZY and PAX Era pods use their own connections and only work with their own batteries. A 510 battery works with 510-thread cartridges.
What voltage is best for live resin carts?
There's no single best number. Start at the lowest setting your battery offers, follow the cart brand's recommendation if it gives one, and increase one step at a time only if the hit feels weak. Lower settings usually keep more of the flavor.
Why is my 510 battery blinking?
Usually it means the battery is low or the cartridge isn't connecting properly. Charge it, then unscrew and reattach the cart. Blink codes vary by brand, so check the manual.
Where can I recycle a vape battery in NYC?
Not in the trash: New York City doesn’t allow rechargeable batteries in household waste. Use a Call2Recycle drop-off, a DSNY Special Waste Drop-off site or a DSNY SAFE Disposal event. Mighty Lucky also takes part in Fernway’s vape recycling program, so you can bring used vapes to our store at 259 Bowery.
